Google search tips- for better searching

We all live in Google. It's more than merely the one of the best search sites on the planet; it has become a constellation of sites and services, from desktop applications to Internet-based applications and destinations, and it's even branching out into offering free Wi-Fi service.
In short, Google is its own universe—and like the universe after the Big Bang, it's constantly expanding. But as it expands the content of information in it increases. So when you search for a particular item a large number of references pop up, some of which may be totally useless to you. So for utilizing Google to its maximum use the following tips: -

1) Include and Exclude search items: -
If you want to search for some thing and want to search for something just include the item in your search add the '+" sign before the item you want to put a connection to.
eg: -if you want to search for apple(fruit) in Google, you will get many references. But most will be dominated by apple computers and all. to refine it put it as
apple +fruit
you will get a better search result

excluding the item is the same way as above. just put the '-' sign in from of the item you want to exclude from the search result

2) Pipe operator:- Google also understands a logical OR, as long as it is in caps. This means you can search for a hotel in Leeds OR Bradford, for example. It is very useful when people, places or things have alternative or variable spellings: [outsourcing bombay OR mumbai]. The OR command can be shortened to a vertical bar (|), as in [outsourcing bombay | mumbai]. Thus if you search for [~food], Google also searches for cooking, cuisine, nutrition, recipes and restaurants.

3) Quotes:- if you want to search for good boy Google will give out all pages with good and boy even if the words are unconnected. but to refine the results use the ' " ' operator. for example "good boy" will give you results of good boy only.

4) Similar terms:- Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms. [~dumb little man -dumb] will get you pages that contain "funny little man" and "stupid little man" but not "dumb little man". Thus if you search for [~food], Google also searches for cooking, cuisine, nutrition, recipes and restaurants.

5) Wildcard operator :- The "*" symbol is a wildcard. This is useful if you're trying to find the lyrics to a song, but can't remember the exact lyrics. [i * that way] will return the Backstreet Boys song you're looking for. It's also useful for finding stuff only in certain domains like using it in "*.edu".

6) Definitions:- Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. [define:dumb] will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links.

7) Calculator: - One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation.

8) Number range:- This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, ["eplchampions 2002..2007] will return lists of champions of epl each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the there are only two periods between the two numbers).

9) Site operator:-Use the "site:" operator to search only within a certain website. [site:espnstar.com football] will search for the term "football" only within this site.

10) Link operator: The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however.

11) Music and Movies:- The "music:" operator returns content related to music only. similarly you can try for movies ans shows.

12) Unit converter:- Use Google for a quick conversion, from yards to meters for example, or different currency: [22 yards in meters]

13) File types:- If you just want to search for .PDF files, or Word documents, or Excel spreadsheets, for example, use the "filetype:" operator.

14) Location of term:- By default, Google searches for your term throughout a web page. But if you just want it to search certain locations, you can use operators such as "inurl:", "intitle:", "intext:", and "inanchor:". Those search for a term only within the URL, the title,
the body text, and the anchor text (the text used to describe a link).
for example :
intitle:"index.of"(filetype|fyletype)Filename

15) Google specific searches:- Instead of searching for a term across all pages on the web, search within a specialized field. Google has a number of specific searches, allowing you to search within blogs, news, books, and much more:

o Blog Search
o Book Search
o Scholar
o Catalogs
o Code Search
o Directory
o Finance
o Images
o Local/Maps
o News
o Patent Search
o Product Search
o Video

16) Advanced search:- Last but not least. If you can't remember any of these operators, you can always use Google's advanced search. This can be helpful if you don't remember the operators.

Try these tips out and make the time you spend for hunting information in Google shorter. Happy hunting.

Password Protection

Want to protect your password and protect your id from getting hacked....Here are some tips to to protect your password.

  • Never write down your password- Take note and never write down your password on a piece of paper or save it in a file onto your hard disk.We never realize how many pieces of paper dominate our computer desk space. If you do so anybody can read it and your id can be easily hacked.
  • Don't give your password to anyone for accessing your account, even to your close friends for that matter. and also don't give your password to websites you think are questionable.
  • Be choosy while keeping your password. Don't keep the same thing as your id as your password. and also don't keep a password that can be easily guessed by other people.
  • Try to use different cases, numbers and also symbols in your password so that i can't be cracked using BRUTE FORCE cracking(the most successful method of password cracking)
  • Never use the same password for more than one id. So that in case your one id is screwed you atleast have your second id.
  • If you have problem remembering the passwords for different id's use Firefox. It savs your passwords and your id when you enter it in a site. So if you forget your password just open the Mozzila Firefox options and check it there.
  • If possible change your passwords once in atleast 2 monts so that you can ensure the safety of your login id.

Control windows using your keyboard

If you like to keep many windows open while you work (or play) on your computer, you'll appreciate knowing these keyboard shortcuts. You can quickly switch between your Web browser, e-mail, instant message windows, and other programs without taking your hands off the keyboard.

Action

Shortcut

Minimize a window to your taskbar

ALT, SPACEBAR, N

Maximize a window so it takes up your whole desktop

ALT, SPACEBAR, X

Restore a window so it's visible but doesn't take up your whole desktop

ALT, SPACEBAR, R

Close a window

ALT+F4

Switch to the last window you had open

ALT+TAB

Switch to any window

Hold down the ALT key, and press TAB until the window you want is active

Programs often start up in a "restored" state, where the window takes up only part of the screen. To maximize the window so that it takes up the entire screen, press the ALT key, press the SPACEBAR, and then press X. This will feel natural after you do it a few times, and you will feel much more efficient while using your computer.

So try out this keyboard tips to make you work more efficient and fast. Using the keyboard saves lots of time and save the time consumed by you spend to find your mouse.

Opening programs using keyboard

The Start menu is great for finding programs, but its multiple levels of folders can be time consuming to navigate. If there is a program you start frequently, you should set a keyboard shortcut for it so that you can start the program without taking your hands off the keyboard.

1.Click the Start menu, and then click All Programs. Right-click the program that you want to start with a keyboard shortcut, and then click Properties.

2.Click in the Shortcut key box. Now press the letter on your keyboard that you want to use to start the program. Make it easy to remember—for example, press I for Microsoft Internet Explorer.
You can use either uppercase or lowercase letters when creating your keyboard shortcuts—and when accessing them later. In the Shortcut key box, Microsoft Windows XP automatically adds Ctrl + Alt + before the key you pressed. When you want to start the program, hold down both the CTRL and ALT keys simultaneously, while also pressing the letter you chose. This way, your program won't start every time you type that letter.

3.Click OK.

4.Now test your shortcut. Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys, and then press the letter you chose. If you find it difficult to hold down two keys at once, read Turn on the Sticky Keys feature. Your program should start. This can be done to opening your favorite or most used programs easily. Try this trick and impress your friends if you are doing this in front of them.

To activate StickyKeys

1.Press the SHIFT key five times. A dialog box opens with instructions on how to set up the StickyKeys feature.

2.Click OK.

Internet browsers-an comparision

There is a speed war on the web. Browsers compete on many fronts; security, standards support, features and speed.

Browsers are the programs which allow you to view World Wide Web files, but you already know that. What you may not know is that it is bad form to choose sides in the browser wars, unless you're in a closed, controlled, intranet environment.

Many organizations and users try to claim that their browser is the fastest and better than the others. The Opera site claims that Opera is The Fastest Browser on Earth!. The Mozilla site claims that Firefox empowers you to browse faster (faster than what?). Mozilla itself is quoted as being an alternative to Microsoft IE and it's faster to boot.Internet Explorer users often claim that they use it because of its speed, as the alternatives take longer to start and load pages.

This year(2007) itself three new browsers were released- Internet explorer 7,Mozzila Firefox 2 and Opera 9. Lets us see the comparisons of these 3 browsers and see which browser offers what.

Firefox wins the browser test but Opera isn’t far behind. The upcoming version 9.1 – equipped with a phishing filter – should then be able to catch up with the ‘Fox. Internet Explorer, however, bags last place. With a commanding 87-percent market share, it stands at the top of hackers’ hit list, yet Microsoft still dares to leave a few holes open in the new Internet Explorer 7.

The real winner: -

Regardless of who will prevail in the browser wars, the users will win. While fighting each other, the browser makers innovate and simplify. They increase our productivity by integrating into the browser web concepts such as search, RSS, OPML, microformats and more. The core browsers are getting slimmer and faster, while extensions that cover a wide range of services are being developed by external parties.

Where to get the browsers :-

Mozilla Firefox- mozilla.org

Opera-opera.com/

Internet Explorer -microsoft.com/
